Dr. Marianna Prokopi (PhD), is a Senior Research Scientist at the BioLISYS lab at CUT. She obtained her BSc in Molecular and Cellular Biology and MSc by Research in Biochemistry from University of Kent. She then attended the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine for her second MSc degree in Medical Microbiology. She received her PhD from the Cardiovascular Division, School of Medicine at King's College London, UK for her work on stem cells “Evaluation of endothelial progenitor cells as therapeutic agents implicating the development of microparticles and the application of proteomics and miRNA-omics”. Dr. Prokopi moved to Cyprus in 2011 and was initially employed by Remedica Pharmaceuticals Ltd as a Q/C Analyst. She then received a grant from RIF as a research fellow at Trojantec Ltd, at the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Center. The success of the project led to the filing of a patent application on “the delivery of microRNAs using mesenchymal stem cell microparticles” in order to protect development and commercial rights. In 2013 she became the senior scientist at Trojantec Ltd and received a Eureka Eurostars grant. The project was a collaborative effort between Trojantec Ltd and CUT. Dr Prokopi has vast experience in the development of cancer animal models, in vivo imaging techniques, development of novel cancer therapeutics, nanotechnology, proteomics and molecular diagnostics. Dr Prokopi was also actively involved in the founding of the Cancer Research Center, a multi-faculty organization established as a center for state-of-the-art multidisciplinary research in the oncology field.
